finally…android gets push notifications…

it was almost a year in coming (if not longer) but at Google’s IO event yesterday morning – they finally announced the next-gen Android operating system (version 2.2 – codenamed Froyo) would contain a number of new features – one of them being – push notifications.

Of course they don’t actually call it push notification – no – it’s called cloud to device messaging but trust me – it’s the same thing.

Given the large number of non 2.2 android handsets already in circulation (many of which will not be updatable to 2.2) – implementing this across the board for services like echoecho will require careful handling but at least it shows google is moving in the right direction.

of course our “where are you” popups will stay is cool as always – push or no push – it’s only the back end communication that will become more efficient…
